On today's blog i'm going to be talking about how the pop culture has changed in movie popularity over time. To start off basic, in 1981 the most popular types of movies were originals. This means that they were the first movie of that idea created. As we go 10 years later into the 1991 column, the most popular movies of the decade were adaptations. For example, the movies Hook, Robin Hood, and Beauty and the Beast were all remade to be better. In 2001 we can start to see a shift towards sequels becoming more popular as 5 out of the top 10 are sequels. And finally in 2011, 8 out of the top 10 movies are sequels. First of all, I notice the trend that sequels are becoming more popular as time goes on. Obviously this seems pretty fair to agree with as in 1981 there were only 2 sequels in the top 10 and in 2011 there were 8. I think this is because in 1981, there were not as many movies out there so that means there is a lot of room for ideas to be brought out and you can be more creative. Whereas in 2011, there are less “new ideas” being created in movies because most of them have already been made in the past. To me, this is why I think sequels are more popular now. They are just easier to make in the sense of creativity and they can almost promise a huge income if the sequel is being made for the right movie. I think this is the generation of sequels and there will not be that many originals making it on the top 10. Disregarding what type of movie it is, (original, adaptation, or sequel) we can see that the top 10 movies were all sequels of popular movies. For example, in 2001 Planet of the Apes made it on the top 10 list as a sequel then 10 years later Rise of the Planet of the Apes also makes it on the top 10 as a sequel. To me it seems that sequels are becoming more popular because they are typically being made for movies that everyone enjoyed. This will make lots of money for the producers as people will want to watch these movies.
